BIG DATA: A REVOLUTION THAT WILL TRANSFORM HOW WE LIVE, WORK, AND THINK

June 12, 2013

POSTED ON APRIL 23, 2013 BY SANDER DUIVESTEIN

BIG DATA: A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live, Work, and Think,” is a revelatory exploration of the hottest trend in technology and the dramatic impact it will have on the economy, science, and society at large. Which paint color is most likely to tell you that a used car is in good shape? How can Con Edison catch the most dangerous New York City manholes before they explode? And how did YOU (well, Google) predict the spread of the H1N1 flu outbreak? The key to answering these questions, and many more, is big data, our newfound ability to crunch vast collections of information, analyze it instantly, and draw sometimes profoundly surprising conclusions from it. This emerging science can translate myriad phenomena—from the price of airline tickets to the text of millions of books—into searchable form, and uses our newfound computing power to unearth revelations that we never could have seen before.

A revolution on par with the Internet or perhaps even the printing press, big data will change the way we think about business, health, politics, education, and innovation in the years to come. It also poses fresh threats, especially the prospect of being penalized by for things we haven’t even done yet, based on big data’s ability to predict our future behavior.”

Fantastic presentation……

[Tech] It’s Official: Google Glass Is Here!

February 25, 2013

While Apple iWatch rumors continue to slog their way through the blog-o-sphere, Google has upped the ante. Google’s Glass is not a rumor, it’s real. In addition (according to Google) you can get one by the end of 2013 by entering and winning a special contest.

At least, Google calls it a contest. There are some unique rules. First, you have to pay $1,500 for your Glass, if you win. Also, you have to travel to New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles to pick your prize up. (UPS is not available.)

If that isn’t enough, you have to come up with a really creative idea about how you will use your Glass. If you need help coming up with ideas, Google has released a video entitled How it Feels [through Glass] that provides a behind-the-lens view of the Glass experience.

Google hasn’t specified how many “winners” there will be – supposedly, that will depend on the number of “really creative ideas.”

CNET reported that Glass will be able to connect via Bluetooth to both Android phones and the iPhone, while pulling data from Wi-Fi and using the 3G/4G feeds from the connected phone. Glass will not have its own cellular radio.

Restoring Profits And Confidence With Big Data

October 12, 2012

“Retail and commercial banks should be simple and they should be boring,” Lloyds Banking Group’s chief executive said last week. “The industry must change,” António Horta-Osório told the CBI Scotland annual dinner.

Tempting as it may be for the capital markets to laugh at such navel gazing four years after the financial crisis began, Horta-Osório’s words ring true in electronic trading as well.

The market has been losing confidence in computerized trading, from the Flash Crash of 2010 through last month’s Knight Capital scandal, with many other indignities in between.

The financial services industry — including banks and the capital markets — does have to change, returning to fundamentals, as Horta-Osório advocates. But it must also look forward, preparing for future calamity and searching for new opportunities.

Taken By Storm

“A successful business must be thoroughly prepared for unexpected disasters,” wrote Bob Guilbert, managing director of marketing and products at Boston-based investment IT firm Eze Castle Integration. “Even just a few moments of downtime could be extremely costly, so it is essential that firms implement sound business continuity and disaster recovery procedures.”

Systematic protection of a firm’s data is more than a safety net. The business continuity plan (BCP) and disaster recovery (DR) systems that Guilbert discussed last week can safeguard a firm’s business and an industry’s reputation if disaster strikes.

“The one positive aspect of hurricanes and other weather-related disaster scenarios from a BCP perspective is that businesses typically have advanced warning of their arrival,” Guilbert said.

“A firm that is ill-prepared for inclement weather is going to face serious challenges when an unannounced incident, such as a building fire, occurs.”

Keeping such humdrum fundamentals strong will keep the industry’s foundation strong. And that can serve as a mighty launchpad for further, more exciting technological strides in the pursuit of new trading prospects.

Big Data Trading Strategy

Citi announced upgrades for its equity options algorithms in the U.S. last week, letting traders choose how forcefully to seek liquidity. Aggressive settings incline the algorithm to cross the spread during a trade, while milder settings tend toward mid-market orders and cross the spread less often.

Other market participants are looking to gain their advantage through high-frequency trading (HFT) technologies.

Some of these firms are seeking new trading opportunities via Big Data and complex event processing (CEP) technologies, alongside data analytics engines.

Part of the trick exploiting Big Data is to adopt solutions that provide insight without losing speed. The rest of the trick is to adopt those solutions without going broke. That not only keeps firms in business, it avoids another scandal that could further spoil the industry’s reputation.

On to the Basics

The U.S. Department of Treasury announced Sunday that it will sell half of its stake in AIG. The $18 billion sale means the end of the Uncle Sam’s four-year tenure as the New York firm’s majority shareholder.

This also means that the capital markets have a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the basics. But that mastery will mean little without a responsible vision for the future.

So getting back to basics won’t be boring. It will require innovative strategies and technologies to weather storms and conquer new frontiers.

adidas: Light You Up Projection

June 20, 2012

Here’s a great example of what happens when projection mapping meets social media. Yesterday we saw a nice piece of experiential marketing from adidas with their ‘Ready to Run‘ campaign, now here is a nice piece of projection from adidas that let’s the user see their name in lights!

This ‘Light You Up’ Projection from adidas was held in New York’s Madison Square Garden and features the Argentinian soccer star Messi. Facebook fans were invited to log onto an adidas Facebook app and post an answer to the question ‘What does light get you?’ Each response was rewarded with the person’s name appearing on the big screen, plus a sharable image and video. A great piece of social/real world integration. Nice find Alicia!

Whether you’re a tourist or a native you’ll be navigating your city like never before. For the first time you can see every business in your neighborhood with just a single glance at the map. Click on a business to get all their information including phone number and hours, foursquare tips from previous customers, their most recent tweet, even if they’re running a daily deal that you can take advantage of.

Net-A-Porter: Augmented Reality Shop Windows

January 26, 2012

NET-A-PORTER are rolling out Augmented Reality Shopping Windows, around the world including Paris, New York, London, Munich and Sydney. The video demo above is from late last year for Fashion’s Night Out celebrations in London and New York, but as of today, it’s been rolled out globally for the new Karl by Karl Lagerfeld collection, with the same sort of features.

After downloading the NET-A-PORTER iPhone/iPad app, customers who turn up at stores can activate an Augmented Reality shopping experience by pointing the camera at the various pieces in the window, revealing 360 degree product models, video catwalk showcases, product information, pricing and the ability to buy instantly… It’s also a great way to generate after hours sales

Could this idea also be used to fill the windows of the shops that are now closed. You can just see online retailers taking window space in the physical world to drive further online sales.

This is a great example of a business thinking outside of the box. The merging of new technologies to provide an innovative, fun and interactive experience really blows our mind. Although this at present is a little fun the business applications could be endless. Big brands could really take this under their wing as it enables them to engage with clients at a new level.
