Fusion-IO Continues Its Path to Dominance in Storage Market

July 9, 2012

Apple is expanding its use of Fusion-IO. Apple’s increasing use of the Fusion-IO storage platform may move the company ahead of Facebook as Fusion-IO’s biggest customer. If you aren’t familiar with Fusion-IO, you might be soon. Some analysts are saying the company’s technology may soon become “the” defacto standard for storage in the same way that Windows and Intel transformed and then dominated the computing market.

Fusion-IO has a fairly narrow focus in the storage market. It sells flash memory components that plug into servers and act as high-performance cache However, the narrow focus hasn’t limited Fusion-IO’s success. Founded in 2005, since the company’s IPO last summer Fusion-IO’s share price has steadily increased as investors confident in Fusion-IO’s ability to command the market snapped up the stock. Earlier this month, rumors spread that Dell might be attempting to acquire the startup. .Fusion-IO’s platform is used widely by both Apple and Facebook to deliver a speedy user experience.

Use of Fusion-IO’s technology isn’t the company’s only link to Apple. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has served as Fusion-IO’s Chief Scientist since 2008. Facebook accounts for 36 percent of Fusion-IO’s revenue, 24 percent come from Apple and 14 percent from Hewlett-Packard. Fusion-IO has also added Salesforce.com and Pandora as customers. However, not everyone is enamored with Fusion-IO. The CEO of EMC lashed out at Fusion-IO saying that the company’s attitude toward flash memory, “darn right foolish.” EMC started by using flash arrays, then took a page from Fusion-io’s playbook by announcing VFcache, a PCIE-based server-side product.

Fusion’s CEO still claims Emc is a bottleneck, arguing his firm’s technology goes beyond a standard pcie connection and provides direct memory access that eliminates the overheads of disk protocols.

Critics of Fusion’s direct memory access approach, known as its VSL technology, argue that this technique requires firms to rewrite applications to take advantage of the solution.

Analysts tell SiliconAngle that this is the land grab that is going on. New cloud-based apps require new approaches to development, and a key to Fusion’s success will be its ability to get ISV’s and application developers to code to its API.

No matter what your opinion is on Fusion-IO’s strategy, clearly the company is doing something right. Almost all of the company’s customers report dramatic improvements in performance after adopting Fusion-IO’s platform. Fusion-IO’s revenue are projected to climb 82 percent over the next two years. This is the faster growth than any of the company’s competitors. Fusion-IO is a pioneer in the flash-based storage market and that gamble is paying off.

Autonomy explains just how large ‘big data’ is (infographic)

June 11, 2012

With so much talk about “big data” lately and data-focused companies like 10gen and Delphix recently grabbing large funding rounds, it’s a topic that won’t be going away any time soon. But what exactly is it and is there an easier way to comprehend just how big it all is?

Typically, big data describes working with monster-sized data sets that are hard to manage using standard database tools. Thus, we have all kinds of companies scrambling to provide new software and tools to manage, store, and analyze those data sets. Other big data startups that have seen investments include Cloudera, Palantir, Datahero, and Precog. On top of that, big dogs like Google, Yahoo, and HP are providing their own solutions too.

HP-owned Autonomy has taken a stab at trying to explain “big data” with a new infographic. Autonomy’s private cloud surpassed 50 petabytes in April and just last week, the company released new tools focused on big data, so clearly the company has big data on its mind.

In a perfect world my flights would always be on time, drivers would always remember to signal, and people would respond to my texts immediately.  But the world is far from perfect – especially when it comes to data center infrastructure.

For example, as we all know, Moore’s law dictates that computer technology has an exponential growth rate, doubling roughly every 18 to 24 months. Unfortunately, while there are powerful storage offerings on the market, storage technology – especially rotational media – has not always advanced at the same pace. The result is often a performance gap between the compute power available in today’s powerful multi-core processors and large-footprint memory and storage. While more spindles have led to some throughput improvements, this evolutional discrepancy can cause IO bottlenecks, slow applications, performance limitations, latency problems, and database blocking.

You can try and solve the problem by adding drives, memory, or even more servers. Application optimization is also a possibility if you can hire enough people. In fact, many processors are being under-utilized by as much as 50% due to IO bottlenecks. The challenge is that these solutions may require more operational or capital expenditures than you’re prepared to offer up.

There’s a simpler solution. HP IO Accelerators, powered by Fusion-io, can accelerate application performance more than 10x. We’ve even seen customers reach higher performance boosts — occasionally up to 30x. How? These server-based memory cards sit directly on the PCIe bus within your rack, tower, or blade server. HP IO Accelerators accelerate applications by bypassing traditional storage controllers and unlocking trapped compute cycles.  They’re made from solid state NAND FLASH, not simply a NAND-based device that emulates a hard disk like a Solid State Drive (SSD). And, because they sit inside the server, they’re not being accessed in the storage array via much slower links.

Sound too good to be true? HP IO Accelerators have been used by innovative companies such as Wine.com and Answers.com to dramatically enhance application performance – a 10x increase for Answers.com – and even consolidate their database tier. (Check out the Wine.com  story on the Reality Check: Server Insights blogs to learn more.)

This week the next generation of HP IO Accelerators – with even greater performance enhancements – was launched as part of the second wave of HP ProLiant Gen8 innovations. In February, HP announced the ProLiant Gen8 server line. This revolutionary new generation represents the world’s most self-sufficient servers, with built-in intelligence to give our customers the highest quality experience over the server’s entire lifecycle. (Read more information on the new HP ProLiant rack, tower, and blade servers released today.)

Dynamic workload acceleration is a huge part of the Gen8 story, and the new HP IO Accelerator ioDrive2 and ioDrive2 Duo can provide significant gains over the first generation of IO Accelerators. In fact, they can roughly reduce access latency by half, deliver five times more read IOPS and three times more write IOPS, as well as twice the read bandwidth. That means you now have outsized performance to unlock applications such as:

  • Database Acceleration (SQL, Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, etc.)
  • Virtualization (VMware, Hyper V, etc.)
  • Tier 1 Apps: CRM, ERP, Exchange, SharePoint, etc.
  • Web / Cloud / SAAS
  • Data Warehousing
  • Entertainment / Multimedia / Imaging
  • Finance / Trading

HP IO Accelerators are available now for HP ProLiant Gen8 servers in a variety of options ranging in capacity from 365GB to 2410GB, for PCI-Express 2.0 x4 and PCI-Express 2.0 x8 bus interfaces. List prices range from $6,499 to $38,699.

You can find more information about the next generation of HP IO Accelerators here.

And, finally, if you haven’t yet registered for HP Discover do it today. We’ll be showing a live demo of HP IO Accelerators at work with HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. There’s no better place to see and prepare for the future of IT – not to mention network with your peers and see live performances by Grammy-winning artists.

C24 are proud to announce that they have become an HP AllianceONE partner. The AllianceONE is a comprehensive partner program focused on HP’s Converged Infrastructure strategy of providing a shared services model to deliver secure, best-in-class applications. Achieving this partner accerditation underlines our C24′s commitment to delivering best-in-class solutions for our clients both present and future commented David Ricketts Head Of Marketing C24.

Managed Hosted Solutions for Professional Service Companies.

March 15, 2011

C24 are now working with a number of professional service companies and so we thought it was about time to highlight the type of solutions that we offer. Below is an outline of Professional Service Hosting from C24.

Managed hosting is ideal for professional service organisations as the solutions that are now available fit well with the way you work. The choice of partner however is slightly more difficult as there are large and small organisations who can deliver services to SLA’s. Choosing the right business partner is difficult, and we at C24 understand the difficulty in making the right choice.

We are a hosting and application delivery specialists with deep professional services domain knowledge especially within the legal and accountancy sectors. We have invested heavily in our hosting infrastructure, IT management systems and people for the benefit of our existing and future client base to enable us to deliver on ‘our promise’ to be the very best solutions provider in our sector.

Business benefits for professional service companies when hosting with C24:

  • Remove certain business costs, overheads and waste
  • Benefit from flexible software licensing
  • Consultative approach to information life-cycle management
  • Operational expenditure to drive your IT development
  • Fixed cost monthly charges
  • Greater business flexibility
  • Adopt the latest green technology and cut your carbon footprint
  • IT strategy built around data security, application delivery and data management

When engaging with potential clients there are a number of business operational areas that we evaluate the following:

  • Deliver of business applications at speed to potentially multiple locations
  • Security of business data, machines and mobile users, taking into account ISO, PCI-DSS and potentially the Data Protection Act.
  • Data life-cycle management
  • Currently used suite of applications
  • Managed print solutions
  • C24 and client in-house expertise

The evaluation undertaken gives C24 a full understanding of the current situation and if required we could also run our information life-cycle management tools that would enable us to have a snap shot of your current data, when it was last opened, used, number of duplication, location on the network and if sensitive information is accessible by whom. This activity is a real eye opener for the professional services management teams as it clearly shows the current data situation.

Delivery of business applications at speed.

C24 prides itself on our ability to delivery your application at speed to multiple locations using various best of breed technologies. We deliver at present application to over 107 countries around the world for some of the world’s largest businesses, highlighting C24’s hosting and application delivery specialities. One of the biggest issues clients face with application delivery is latency, this we try to minimise by again using the correct technology and suppliers to try to remove this obstacle.

Full audits are done prior to any client being hosted in order for us to get a full understanding of the current infrastructure, communication suppliers and technologies being delivered.

Security of business data.

Security is paramount, from the fact that your solution would be hosted out of a Tier IV datacentre; the highest classification available, to network security and intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems to finally having total data centre physical security, we have your data and systems secured.

Data life-cycle management

Data growth rate for businesses is around 32% year on year and data storage issues are becoming a major issue. Most organisations do not manage their data correctly and will have years of data stored on primary storage and backed-up continuously month after month. This is where C24’s data life-cycle management solution (DLM) enables professional service companies to manage their data properly.

Current applications

C24 understand most of the applications that Professional Services companies use and have delivered them over wide area networks for many clients. It is always important however to recognise how these applications work within a hosted environment with new server software technology etc. This is done as a matter of course by C24. C24 engineers are fully trained in most professional services applications and we carry accreditation from Citrix, VMWare, ProCurve, HP and Microsoft.

Managed Print Solutions

We have found from experience that when you deliver applications remotely that one of the major issues is the ability for clients to print when they need to. This may sound relatively simple but we know that this area is problematic. We bring the ability to overcome this issue when we engage with a client.

In-house experience

C24 is seen as an extension to our clients businesses, as we enable them to do what they do best. Solutions that are purchased from us apart from hosting are, 24/7 helpdesk, internal system monitoring, systems integration and information life-cycle management. These solutions enable C24 to offer complete piece of mind to potential clients.

  • Enjoy industry-class, 24/7 support of their applications with an expert team of product specialists on tap. Bring on stream new software and new functionality very quickly.
  • Focus exclusively on running their own business without the concerns of IT or IT people management.
  • Easily evaluate external performance through KPIs and SLAs.
  • Take advantage of trusted IT strategists to help drive IT and business planning.
  • Benefit from business continuity and disaster recovery.
