ReDigi, Murfie create used-record marketplaces for the digital age

October 31, 2011

We spotted this great little solution on the JWT Intelligence site.

ReDigi, which launched in beta earlier this month, calls itself “the world’s first online marketplace for used digital music” and says it’s “giving digital goods a resale value for the first time.” Its technology allows transfer of a digital file between users while preventing multiple copies from existing concurrently. A Verification Engine ensures that users sell only legally downloaded tracks; these are then deleted from the owner’s computer (as well as synced devices) and added to ReDigi’s marketplace. When they’re purchased, the seller earns ReDigi credits. There’s plenty of incentive for buyers, since the cost is less than new music without risk of scratches and broken CD cases. Legally, ReDigi says it’s all kosher (explanation here).

We have to agree with the guys over at JWT as we believe that we will start seeing a number of new models for the sale of valuable digital content, could also be interesting for businesses like HMV to see what the future could possibly hold. Watch this space.
